Eli Roth could have made this movie and I'm not sure there'd be a huge difference. To people who don't buy into the salvation myth, it's pretty lazy torture porn. It struck me as a simple re-telling - Jesus good, Judas bad, Jews worse, guy gets tortured to death. The story is already laid for him if anything, his primary fault here is just that of laziness. However, this isn't something you can blame Gibson for. This is a terrible thing to us, and it's part of what makes this film so bad. Many of them include personal privation, degradation and torture (physical or psychological) for the glory of God. If we skip the social codes, the histories and genealogies, and focus just on the stories, many of them do not speak to how non-religious people feel about the world. For us non-religious folks The Bible is fiction. For me, it's a film about a particularly Catholic theme, meant for Catholic audiences. I'm not being snarky, I would be genuinely surprised.
